The company places significant emphasis on developing new products, noted Oleg Tsyba, Business Development Director at TK “Novostal-M”, during his speech at the 20th International Conference “Galvanized and Pre-painted Steel: Production and Consumption Trends.”

In particular, the company has introduced several types of rebar designed for specialized applications. The latest innovation is galvanized rebar, with the first batch produced in February of this year.

According to Oleg Tsyba, this type of product is expected to gain strong demand in the Russian market. There is already growing interest from road construction companies and bridge structure manufacturers. The company’s next step is to implement a pilot project with an infrastructure developer, which would then lead to the development of a GOST standard for “Galvanized steel for reinforcement of reinforced concrete structures.”

One of the major challenges in reinforced concrete construction is the formation of cracks, through which moisture and air can penetrate, causing corrosion of the embedded rebar. As a result, structures can deteriorate before the end of their intended service life. Galvanized rebar effectively helps to prevent this issue. It is already widely used abroad — particularly in coastal areas and marine platforms. In some countries, galvanized rebar accounts for up to 5% of total rebar consumption.

Meanwhile, the Russian Ministry of Construction is currently developing a methodology for calculating the life cycle of buildings and structures. In this context, rebar with anti-corrosion coatings can clearly demonstrate its advantages — unless replaced by alternative materials such as fiberglass rebar.
